PriestmanGoode's Innovative Seating Solution for Metro Trains and Subways

The design studio PriestmanGoode has come up with a way to increase seating capacity in modern metro trains and subway cars through a fresh approach to passenger arrangement and more ergonomic boarding methods. According to the developers, this innovation can boost the capacity of a single train car by more than 30%.

The Concept

This concept was born out of recent photos taken by activists on public transport in London. These images showed train cars overcrowded by over 200% of their normal capacity. To prevent such situations in the future, PriestmanGoode's head Paul Priestman suggested a complete rethinking of passenger seating arrangements.

Practical Implementation

The company proposed two main concepts for new ergonomic seats:

1) Horizon: This seating method involves narrower seats than standard ones. Passengers must partially support themselves with their feet. On one hand, these seats reduce strain on the limbs and back while comfortably securing them. On the other hand, they save a significant amount of space in the train car. Additionally, special stands on the back of the opposite seat can accommodate a tablet or a cup of coffee.

2) IslandBay: This system is based on traditional seating islands. They are complemented by special tables that can also be folded down as seats during peak hours. Moreover, there are special supports attached to the side poles of the seats for those standing to lean on.
