In an experiment blurring the line between human entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence, Robby Houston embarked on a unique challenge. Armed with $100 and a 90-day timeline, he tasked an autonomous AI agent with a single objective: turn that initial investment into a thriving online business generating $20,000 in profit. Houston sat down with host Chris Koerner to unpack the wild journey of "Ron," the AI agent that went from a failed freelancer to the centerpiece of an $8,300-a-month subscription business in under two weeks.
The premise was simple. Houston utilized an open-source AI agent connected to Anthropic's Claude model. He named the agent Ron and gave it full access to his computer, allowing it to execute code, browse the internet, and make strategic decisions. The challenge was inspired by the 2023 "HustleGPT" experiment, where a user gave GPT-4 a budget and acted as its human liaison. However, with agentic AI, Ron operated with far more autonomy.
Ron's initial strategy was traditional. After analyzing side hustles, the AI proposed offering SWOT analyses and market research for small businesses on Fiverr. Houston set up the profile, pasted Ron's gig descriptions, and waited. The result? Absolute silence. As a new seller with zero reviews and no marketing budget, Ron's Fiverr gig failed to attract a single customer.
The turning point came from Houston's decision to document the journey. He posted a short video on TikTok explaining the experiment: "I gave my AI $100, and it's trying to build a business to keep itself alive." The video exploded, amassing over a million views. The comments section was flooded with intrigued viewers, but they weren't asking for SWOT analyses. Instead, hundreds of people asked the exact same question: "How do I get my own Ron?"
This is where the AI flexed its capabilities. Ron used a web scraping tool to analyze the TikTok comments and immediately identified the pivot. The AI told Houston the real opportunity wasn't in freelance consulting; it was in selling access to autonomous agents. The audience didn't want the service Ron was providing; they wanted Ron itself.
Transitioning from a Fiverr freelancer to a SaaS provider required serious infrastructure. Houston, not a highly technical coder, worked alongside Ron to figure out the logistics. They needed a way to host multiple AI agents securely without risking users deleting files on local machines. Ron suggested renting bare-metal servers from Contabo. For $600 a month, they secured enough server power to host individual, containerized versions of the AI. Each user would get a sealed, secure environment to run their own agent.
To test the waters, Houston created a presale offer. For a $10 deposit, users could reserve their spot to get their own AI agent. Within days, 600 people signed up, generating $6,000 before the product was fully built. When they officially launched the community, they priced it at $29 per month. This subscription included access to a private Discord community, templates, and a personal, 24/7 autonomous AI agent hosted in the cloud.
The results have been staggering. Just 13 days after officially opening, Houston and Ron secured 270 paying members. The business is currently sitting at $8,374 in Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR), putting it on a run rate of over $100,000 a year. After deducting server and API token costs, the business is highly profitable and well on its way to hitting the $20,000 goal.
Reflecting on the whirlwind experience, Houston emphasized one critical takeaway: share your work publicly. If he had kept the experiment to himself, Ron would have quietly failed on Fiverr. By posting the journey on TikTok, he invited the internet to participate, providing the exact feedback the AI needed to pivot to a winning SaaS product.
