AUTARKY — (from Greek autarkeia, meaning self-sufficiency) a policy of economic independence and self-sufficiency pursued by a state or region. Autarky aims to create a closed, independent economy capable of providing itself with everything it needs without relying on international trade. Common measures include establishing high restrictive tariffs on imported goods and limiting external economic relations.
