AVERAGE / ACCIDENT — (from Italian avaria - damage, loss) 1) a breakdown, accident, or disruption of normal operations; 2) in maritime law, a loss or damage incurred by a vessel or cargo, which can be intentional (general average) or unintentional (particular average); 3) in property insurance, a clause (average clause) that reduces the claim payout proportionally if the property is underinsured.
