EXCISE TAX — (from Fr. accise) An indirect tax charged on the sale of a particular good or service, such as alcohol, tobacco, or fuel. Unlike general sales taxes or VAT, excise taxes are typically levied on specific products and are often included in the price paid by the consumer.
