BRETTON WOODS SYSTEM — an international monetary framework established in 1944, which pegged global currencies to the US dollar and the dollar to gold. It created the IMF and the World Bank, providing exchange rate stability until its collapse in the early 1970s when the US suspended the dollar's convertibility into gold.
